It’s true: women are at greater risk to develop vein conditions such as varicose and spider veins. But that doesn’t mean that men are exempt! The truth is anyone with veins may suffer from vein problems at some point during their life, regardless of risk factors such as gender.

While it may be less common in men, venous insufficiency may occur at any stage of life. When veins malfunction, you may notice symptoms such as pain, aching, throbbing, or swelling in the legs. There’s also a possibility that varicose and/or spider veins become visible. These are tell-tale signs that it may be time for a vein specialist to evaluate your leg health. Men frequently wait much longer than women to seek vein care. Oftentimes they will only visit the doctor for vein problems once symptoms can no longer be ignored and his significant other encourages a visit to a specialist.

How do I know if I have a vein condition?

The only way to know for sure is to be evaluated by a trained specialist. A vein specialist (also known as a Phlebologist) will complete a detailed examination of your leg health. The examination will typically include discussion about your symptoms and your overall health history. The medical team will also do a painless physical evaluation of your legs, including measurements, photos, and vein mapping using color duplex ultrasound.

This full medical examination with a vein specialist will uncover any underlying vein disorders and help the health care team develop a customized treatment plan best suited for your condition.

Vein conditions are progressive and may only get worse if left untreated. So, whether you’re a man or a woman, if you’re presenting symptoms of vein problems or have started to notice varicose or spider veins, take the first step by scheduling an evaluation with a trained vein professional.
